Frequently Asked Questions
sacred commissions
We become what we behold. we shape our tools and then our tools shape us.
- Marshall McLuhan
What kinds of sacred tools do you create?
I offer handmade Spirit Drums, rattles and feathered smudge fans. Each piece is created in ceremony and crafted with love and intention. They are made with mostly natural and ethically sourced materials.
could you tell me more about the Spirit Drum?
Each drum is built on a cedar or maple wood frame although based on access and availability, other types of wood can also be used. The face of the drum often features the natural hide of cow, deer, bison, elk or if available, moose. Drums are fully customizable by size, shape, sinew color, back stringing style, crystals, wood burning, painted designs and intention. These drums are made based on the teachings I received by Shaman Robert Murphy, the founder of the Spirit Drum who gifted this knowledge to share. Each drum is made with a deep love, and reverence towards the spirit of the tree from which the frame was gifted, the spirit of the four legged animal whose hide will continue to live on and the spirit of the one who is called to receive it— whose heart, path and medicine the drum is made to echo.
Every drum also comes with a one on one Zoom session where, once the drum is completed and received, we will awaken the drum through ceremony and merge your spirit with the spirit of your drum in harmony.
Please note that as these drums are crafted with real animal hide and wood. Natural blemishes and subtle imperfections are all a part of the beauty of working with living materials. They do not affect the quality or sound of the drum; rather, they enhance its uniqueness and character.
How are the rattles made?
Each rattle is made with the same level of reverence and heart-centered intention as my drums. They are typically crafted from turtle shells, wood, or the hides of bison, elk, or—when available— moose. These particular hides are chosen not only for their spiritual significance, but also for their natural durability. Their thickness and strength make them especially well suited for rattles, which are often used in movement, rhythm and contact with the body or sacred objects. This ensures your rattle can withstand the natural wear of ceremonial use while continuing to carry its spirit and sound for years to come.
What are the smudge Fans made from?
Smudge fans are created with ethically sourced feathers, such as turkey, pheasant or crow and maybe adorned with accent feathers from birds like peacocks, ducks, and parrots. Other feathers maybe used as well— especially if you’ve been gifted one that holds personal meaning. If you have a feather you’d like incorporated, you are welcome to mail it to me, as long as it has been legally and ethically obtained. Please note that certain protected species (such as eagle or other protected birds) are regulated by law and cannot be used unless proper documentation is provided. If you are unsure, I am happy to help clarify what is possible.
Are there any restrictions on where these items can be shipped?
Yes there are some restrictions to be mindful of. I can ship my sacred tools anywhere in the US and internationally. However, certain hides such as elk, bison, and deer will require a Wildlife Fee for customs of $150.00; this fee does not apply for domestic animals— cow or horse.
What is the process to commission a sacred tool?
Once you have an idea of what you would like created, please reach out by scheduling a consultation via my appointments page, or by filling out and submitting the form below. From there, we will schedule a phone call or Zoom meeting to discuss further details to include what materials you wish to incorporate as well as any intentions you would like me to imbue your sacred tool with. Once a plan is developed, you will be sent an invoice reflecting the cost of the non-refundable commission fee. This fee varies based on the project ($10-$200) and will cover most of the cost of supplies which will go towards the final price of the completed item.
How long does the process take?
Once your commission fee is received, I will begin gathering the supplies needed to create your tool, if i do not already have them on hand. The timeframe for creation depends largely on the availability of these materials. Please note that less common items — such as mose, elk or horse hides, or certain feathers like crow ro parrot— may take additional time to obtain, sometimes up to several months. Once all supplies are gathers, please allow three to six weeks for the creation and completion of your piece. Your flexibility and patience are deeply appreciated, and I will keep you updated as the process unfolds.
Do you take payment plans?
Absolutely! Payments plans are accepted for all projects. Please note that completed pieces will not be shipped until the final payment has been received. Once your project is finished, you will be notified of its completion and from that point you will have up to six months to complete your payments. If the remaining balance is not paid in full within that time, the piece will be forfeited, Any payments made—excluding the non-refundable commission fee — will be returned, and the tool may then be available for sale in my store. I am always happy to work with you to find a plan that feels comfortable and supportive.
